Segway Tours 2011

(this article first appeared in our 2011 holiday newsletter)

We have written in previous newsletters about the segway, a two-wheeled self-balancing personal transporter. This year we had a chance to take two more awesome tours.

The first was in February, when our good friends Greg and Vicki came to visit from Chicago. We took them to Queen Mary, Long Beach Aquarium, several bird sanctuaries, and other places, but I think we all had the most fun on the Griffith Park segway tour. The tour lasted more than three hours, riding through the back roads of Griffith Park, including a guided observatory tour and many stops for photo ops such as the Burbank studios and Hollywood sign. I never realized Griffith Park was so huge, nor so pleasant.

In August we went to Atlanta (I refereed at the US Kendo Championships). The segway city tour was fantastic. We rode up to all the famous sights: CNN Center, World of Coke, Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia Tech, and the state capitol, to name a few.

On a side note, we found out that southern cooking, at least in Atlanta, is insanely delicious! We tried famous eateries like Varsity Drive In and Mary Mac’s Tea Room, as well as various local places, all of which were really, really good. Our favorite was a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant near our hotel called the "Pig N Chik". Its slogan, "BBQ so good you’ll oink", pretty well describes everything we tried in Atlanta. I never understood why macaroni and cheese is a comfort food before, but now I do!
