In our 2004 newsletter, we wrote about seeing the transit of Venus from Zambia, Africa. Venus crossed between the earth and the sun again on June 5th, the last time it will do so until the year 2117.
Thanks to Dave’s friend Rob of the Haleakala Amateur Astronomers, we were able to set up our equipment and view the transit from the Science City area of Haleakala on Maui (see arrow for our exact location). We were joined for this astronomical adventure by our good friends Greg and Vicki, eclipse addicts whom we’ve joined on many past trips (the first one being to Zambia!).
Not only was the transit viewing a success, we had a blast with Greg and Vicki, staying in Hana, barbecuing and swimming on the beach at Kihei, ziplining upcountry, segway touring Lahaina, and on and on. In fact, we were so busy trying to show them every possible thing to see on Maui that we saw many places that Dave himself had never seen before (and he was born and raised on Maui!).
